If you were to Google ?Time Theft? you would find dozens of articles with titles such as

·        Stop Employee Time Theft Today

·        What You Can Do to Reduce Employee Time Theft

·        Solved: How to Prevent Employee Time Theft in the Workplace

·        Time Theft: Top 7 Ways Employees Steal Time

And my favorite

·        The True Cost of Time Theft

Outside of the theme of time theft, what other things does the articles have in common?

My search was simply for time theft, yet every article, every graphic I encountered portrayed the employee as the thief.

Granted, employees do steal time in various methods of slacking or outright thievery,

but it?s relatively petty compared to the robbery committed by the thief who the employees are accused of stealing from...

Let?s consider the true cost of time theft by first realizing how much time is being stolen and then, the identity of the real thief.

When we think in terms of the time we exchange for money, we consider 40 hours or so per week.

40 hours X 52 weeks and on the surface, we exchange 2,080 hours or 86 days per year for our money.

I want you to start thinking along fresh new lines when it comes to money in relation to your time.

Let?s consider the time that we do not get paid for but dedicate to the maintenance of our job.

Picture this,

It's Tuesday evening and your work day is over, you have friends in Portugal that you would really love to see today.

If you wanted to travel to Portugal (or wherever) at the end of a work day and hang out with friends, would you be able to do so?

If not, why? If your reasoning has to do with you not being able to return in time to report to work the next morning;

do you think it?s possible that your job controls the time in between your work schedule too?

Money reaches into every corner and touch every aspect of our lives. The threat of possible termination for not reporting to work

on time carries enough weight that most responsible adults, wouldn't jeopardize their ability to provide food, shelter, and clothing for their family.

Collateral Time

Let?s say, it takes an employee;

2 hours to prepare for work, you know, shower, breakfast, quiet reflection (sure, you could be out of the door in 45 minutes but that?s part of the problem).

1 hour, 30 mins round-trip to negotiate the rush hour traffic.

1-hour lunch break

the collateral time amounts to 4 hours, 30 mins., extending the 8-hour workday to 12 hours, 30 mins,

12.5 x 5 days increases the 40-hour work week to 62 hours, 30 mins. amounting to 3,250 hours or 135.42 days per year.

I've established an argument for including the 11 hours, 30 mins between scheduled work shifts (you can't go to Portugal).

11.5 hours X 5 days adds an additional 57 hours, 30 mins per week, amounting to 2,990 hours per year or 124.58 days.

If you argue that  sleeping for 8 hours shouldn?t be included, I say, go to sleep in Portugal.

135.42 days + 124.58 days amounts to 260 days per year.

Amount of your time that is controlled by your job.

So maybe, just maybe you're thinking, there's 365 days in a year, I still have 105 daze all to myself.

May I remind you that my goal is to get you to thinking along fresh new lines about your time in relation to

how much of it you spend to get your money.

This next scenario is to get you out of the clouds hoping. because your job wants that time too... Another scenario,

You live in Texas (because I do) with friends on both coasts that you would like to see. The friends on both coasts are also

friends, and arrange for the West Coast friends (4) to visit the friends on the East Coast (3).

You have 2 days away from work, a total of 48 hours. Can you comfortably travel to New York and hang out with your friends?

If not, and the reason why you can't is the same reason for you not being able to travel to Portugal,

maybe your job controls those 48 hours too. I'm going to include them.

48 hours x 52 weeks amounts to 2,498 hours per year or 104 days.

The one day can probably be found in the conversions, but rest assured, a job controls 365 days of an employees life

And if you still have an argument and it's, I don't have to report to work on my days off, I say, spend your days off in Portugal.

Be honest; if money, time, and job commitment were not an issue; would you be anywhere near the vicinity of your home this weekend... or this week?

The secret to gaining more control of your time,

Make more money in a shorter amount of time.

I want to get you to thinking along fresh new lines when it comes to money, thoughts like where it is and how to get it.

If it currently takes 40 hours to earn $1000 (average starting pay for a bachelor?s degree), and you found a way to make $1000 in 4 hours, on the surface the time saved appears to be 36 hours. Right?

Let?s take a closer look at the actual time saved.

Your life with collateral time removed

If it takes 4 hours per week to generate $1000 with no collateral time to consider, you gain 20 hours per day that can be dedicated to non-income generating activities. How would your life change with a 4-hour work week?

How would your life change if you didn't have to be at any particular place, at any particular time to make your money?

In a progressive world, nothing remains the same, including the way we finance our lives. The old way of making money, reporting to a job, and trading large blocks of our time for a paycheck has become increasingly more unsafe, unstable, and unreliable. Shareholder profits mean salary caps and the ever-looming possibility of layoffs when those profits are threatened.

If you're tired of the same old story, let's turn some pages.
